So this was a post from 2016 but it’s been getting a lot of views lately and I thought it deserves a repost as the technique is still as useful even 2 years later. I hope someone finds it helpful. Kindly let me know what you think if you try this!
I “accidentally” made 32 HSTs 2 years ago and I said accidentally because I messed up the cutting of my Squares for the 8 HSTs at once method. I had seen the tutorial for that method somewhere but couldn’t pinpoint it when I needed it (I wasn’t on the blog then and I still don’t know why I didn’t do another Google search?) so I did the maths in my head and figured to get (8) 2.5″ HSTs, I need 2 squares measuring 11″. Needless to say, I was far from being correct! I stitched 1/4″ away on both sides of my diagonal lines but when I came to cut my pieces I realized my HSTs were way bigger than what I wanted so I stopped to find a solution. That’s the brief history of how I came about the 32 HSTs at once. Continue reading “How to make 32 Half Square Triangles (HSTs) at Once”
Good news…my younger sister recently visited haha, that’s not news. The news is that she was nice enough to bring some clothes she made for me (Yes my sister also sews!..she’s yet to catch the quilting fever though). While she was around, I had to suspend sewing because she monopolized my sewing space. No complaints there, she was only making me some more clothes…Happy days! Continue reading “Monday Catch ups”
I thought I should let you know why I have been putting off posting anything on the blog. Since my last post, I’ve been experiencing some challenges on the blog (I suspect the update I did recently). For instance, I was unable to reply your comments individually because I didn’t get email notifications for any comment.I’m not even 100% sure my email subscribers got any notification for that post. I’ve tried every suggestions on the support forum to no avail. Have you experienced this, how did your sort it out? (I’ll very much appreciate any help you can share on this in your comments). I’ve reached out to WordPress support and my hosting providers for their help. Hopefully that gets resolved this week. In the meantime, I have been sewing and can’t wait to share what I’ve been up to with you. Continue reading “For your information only.”
Oh yes you read that right! I “accidentally” made 32 HSTs 2 years ago and I said accidentally because I messed up the cutting of my Squares for the 8 HSTs at once method. Welcome back everyone! Now that the blog hop is done and holiday is over, it’s time to move on to a new project ?
I pieced the center of this work in progress last year but it ended in the unfinished object pile because I couldn’t decide what to do with it then. I picked it up again this year and added some borders. Then I planned to add a bigger border to take it to the desired size (A double bed size) but I wasn’t completely sold, so it went back into the UFO pile. Welcome everyone, Long post alert but it’s my first tutorial y’all! My name is Sola in case you are visiting for the first time via the blog hop, I do hope you enjoy looking around and find a reason to stick around! In other news, sadly (yes I did say sadly )I’m back to work today after my long holiday . It feels like yesterday when I was tracking my fabric delivery hoping it gets to me before I left for my holiday but guess what, they delivered it a day after! Anyway, 3 weeks later after lots of hiccup and dragging my husband out of bed at 6 a.m., I finally got the fabric. Wait…what fabric am I on about?
In Part 1 of this post, I shared about my trip to the Millennium Park with my photographer colleague who did a generous work of photographing my recently finished quilts and how we took too many photos to share in one post so here are the rest of them. I love making mini quilts (about 18″) they’ve been the perfect way for me to develop my quilting skills, I make 18″ minis to practice new techniques, try out new blocks and as practice piece for my free motion or straight quilting. I usually end up making most into throw pillows so when a friend contacted me to make some for her mum, I excitedly agreed.
I spoke to her mum to discuss colors and she said to use my discretion (this is what I love to hear -what does my discretion mean though? perhaps in another post). She described her space and I figured I’ll settle for a gray background and just add various colors to that. I found this variegated gray fabric that works perfectly (I think I am obsessed with variegated fabrics by the way). I couldn’t decide on a color palette but worked from what I had in my stash. I shared my progress with her and she has decided she will like me to include some with black background, coffee brown and touch of yellow so I have more minis to make when I finish my current project. In the meantime, here’s what I’ve made so far 🙂
In other news, I’m currently working on my block for the Cloud 9 Blog Hop and wow…writing a pattern and a tutorial is major work! I am about doing my second test block as my measurement was wayyyy off the first attempt and I missed a lot of steps in the instruction. Much kudos to pattern writers and people that post tutorials!!! I’m happy I signed up for the blog hop though, it is challenging me on so many levels and who doesn’t like a challenge :).
As always, thanks for stopping by and I’ll love to hear your thoughts on writing a tutorial post. For my block there are irregular shapes like diamonds to cut out, would it be better to include templates or will instruction on cutting suffice? I also found useful links to a clear instructions on cutting irregular shapes, is it OK to include that instead? Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the rest of your week.
Thank God it’s Friday! This week seems to have gone by really quickly or maybe I just lost track of the days but I was genuinely surprised when Hubby said thank God it’s Friday. Speaking of Fridays, a couple of Fridays ago, I was discussing with my colleague who is a part time photographer about needing a nice location to photograph my quilts (I figured I needed to put in a little effort than my usual practice of laying the quilt across my chair and photographing it late at night…horrendous!). He not only recommended a nice park close to work but he offered to go with me if I had a camera as he didn’t have his professional camera at hand…well my not so shabby camera would have to do as I wasn’t going to pass off this generous offer. I literally dashed home on my break (I live about 10 minutes away) to get my stuffs and we went to a park called “Millennium Park”, It’s a nice quiet park and I’m surprised I hadn’t visited it before.
On getting to the park we settled for the children section of the park and all I had to do was bring out the Quilts and watch him do his thing, I only assisted when required…how fun right! We took lots of pictures and the reason why it has taken me forever to post this is because editing and watermarking photos aren’t my favorite things to do and so I have been procrastinating until now. Too many pictures to show you and I couldn’t choose hence I have to break this in two parts in order not to bombard you with photos 🙂 Enjoy!
Thank you Mr Wale for all your help! Thanks everyone for stopping by and have a very productive weekend ahead.
I know, I know! I said the next time I post about this it will be completed but that’s not happening anytime soon because I won’t have access to my full sewing space for a while, I’m still on my annual leave. I am however posting a quick picture of my achievements so far and in this post basting your quiltI mentioned I won’t be Quilting this as I go like I have been doing with my other projects. That means the Quilt top is now completed and I might then stick to my promise of not posting about this again until it is completed but I seriously doubt that 😉 I foresee another post while basting this so fingers crossed for now. This was supposed to be part of my #workinprogresswednesday post and for some reason I keep feeling like it’s Wednesday today…so let’s just go along with it shall we?
I recently moved on to a new project after unashamedly abandoning my previous project due to the fear of basting at least for now 🙁 . In the previous post about my new project which I have decided to name “Nautical” …thanks Tierney 🙂 I shared my fabric choices, my chosen pattern and progress as at the time of the post. Today I’m just going to post a quick update of what I’ve done so far. Continue reading ““Playing Along”: A work in Progress”
