Retrospective Tips and Advice for Beginner Quilters

Hello Friends!

I can’t believe how long I’ve stayed away from here…let’s just say between work, health and other “stuffs” I haven’t had enough energy for quilting or blogging in a while! I seem to be making my way out of this imposed hibernation though. Managed to come online every now and then but I can’t wait to catch up on what I’ve missed in the blogosphere and to hopefully have something to share with you soon.

Recall that in my blog hop post consider the flowers (which is part of a series of posts to come) I asked this question – If you had the chance to start over what advice would you give your new beginner self? I received so many wonderful advice that I promised to compile and share in another post. Who knows, it just might help someone out there right?

Quilter’s Laundry Day Mini Quilt Pattern: My crazy experiment!

Welcome back and Happy New Month!

Thank you so much for all your wonderful comment on the blog hop post! Unfortunately my blog had a mind of its own and I was unable to get notifications by email. I believe I replied everyone one way or the other and if I didn’t, I apologize.

Where were we?…Yes, I was telling you about my crazy experiment with trying to up size Jen’s wonderful pattern because making the small one just wasn’t enough! I decided to multiply all the given dimensions…I mean if you want to double numbers you multiply by 2 isn’t it? Turns out it isn’t as simple as that with quilting maths. Another Work in Progress Wednesday

Remember my current work in progress is the wonky quilt-as-you-go Log Cabin. I showed you my progress in the last Post, as of today though, I have now made enough blocks for a baby quilt as contemplated. The quilt top is completely pieced and while I tried to choose an arrangement that best showcases the blocks, In the end I decided to go with the flow.

With the top now completed, it is time to look for a backing fabric. In the spirit of improvising though, I might make a pieced backing from the left over fabrics from piecing the top.

This is really annoying!

Why oh why did it have to be today of all days! It was shaping out to be a great day you know. I got the day off work and after doing some cleaning chores, I figured I could try unpacking some of my sewing stuffs. I was planning to get started on a new project, anything at all to ease the restlessness caused by lack of activity! I emptied one bag of scraps into this laundry basket with the plan to sort them and probably work on a scrappy project.

Welcome to 2017…let’s get it started!

Hi Guys, can you believe it is two entire weeks of the New Year already gone? I can’t either!! That just shows how time flies. Anyhow, let me officially wish you a happy new year and welcome you to 2017. In my last post I briefly reviewed everything that went down last year especially in my Quilting and I did refer you back to my first post from 2016 where I made a list of commitments as against resolutions. I mean there is nothing wrong with making resolutions but I found out over the years that most times the excitement ends at making the list and most often than not it remains a list with no action or result to show.  Hence, decided instead on a list of short and achievable commitments. Subsequently, in addition to the commitments I made last year which are still very valid, I am adding a commitment to be more proactive and deliberate in the actions I take towards achieving my set goals for this year. Truthfully I can’t even say I have it all planned and figured out yet but I am consciously noting what would be nice to and what must be achieved in my quilting and general life. English Paper Piecing (EPP) : Making your template

I remembered when I was first introduced to  English Paper Piecing in beginner’s class, I thought it was cool and easy.  On one hand I thought I am not sure I’ll be doing a lot of this (not a fan of hand stitching – I think it takes forever) and on the other hand I thought this is going to be great to carry with me anywhere. Lately, it has become handy for keeping busy at those times when due to electricity outage I can’t use my electric machine.

Anyway, I have been doing bits and pieces of EPP mostly Hexagons and a brief experiment with diamonds but I got tired of those. I wanted other interesting designs that would be easy for me to make…I’m terrible at following patterns so it had to be something I could figure out on my own. Plus I have all these invitation cards from A box full of Junk that needed recycling 🙂 . Continue reading “English Paper Piecing (EPP) : Making your template”
